The Doheny Eye Institute continues as a leading center of innovation in the research and treatment of eyes, maintaining its top-10 rank among education, research, and patient care programs, as recognized by U.S. News & World Report and Ophthalmology Times. The board and faculty at the Institute have a deep commitment to Mrs. Doheny’s original mandate “…to further the conservation, improvement, and restoration of human eyesight.”
Mrs. Doheny lost her vision in 1944. Though nothing could be done to improve her eyesight, she wanted to help prevent the blindness of others. She consulted with leading ophthalmologists and advisers, and three years later established the Estelle Doheny Eye Foundation at St. Vincent’s Hospital. Today, the Doheny Foundation remains one of the main benefactors of the Doheny Eye Institute.
